Limb lengthening is a procedure to lengthen the bones in the arms or legs. This is done as a gradual process, so that the bones and soft tissues (skin, muscles, nerves, etc.) slowly increase in length. Typically, the process take several months. Limb lengthening can also be combined with gradual or acute deformity correction. Dr. WIemann routinely lengthens the humerus (upper arm bone), femur (thigh bone), tibia (shin bone).
We use the latest surgical techniques and state-of-the-art technology to ensure the best possible outcomes for our patients. Dr. Wiemann is highly skilled and trained to perform both minimally invasive and traditional surgeries. The entire process can take several months but can often be performed using a magnetically lengthening rod within the bone to eliminate the bulky external fixation devices traditionally associated with limb lengthing
Limb lengthening can be done for many reasons. This can be a congenital deformity or as a result of trauma, infection, tumor, a complication of other surgeries and other causes. Individuals with a short stature are also able to have both limbs lengthened to gain additional height. Dr. Wiemann will address each situation uniquely to find the best plan going forward..
